Claims involving breast cancer diagnosis have been the leading cause
of malpractice litigation for many years. The majority of plaintiffs
were pre-menopausal women. The fundamental allegation in the majority
of claims is delay in diagnosis.
The 2002 Breast Cancer Study authorized by the Physician Insurers
Association of America (PIAA) examined breast cancer claims and
found that Ob-Gyns were second only to radiologists as the physician
group affected by litigation, accounting for 44 percent of all claims
alleging delay of breast cancer diagnosis.
A routinely documented test of breast health beyond the current
standard of a clinical breast examination may prove to be beneficial
for the Ob-Gyn practice. Routine NAF assessment may provide this
objective documentation.
